When I came home from Hua Hin I had a nice surprise when I was watering the plants. A few days have now passed and their eyes have now opened.

A great place near Bangkok to enjoy the sea breeze is Bang Pu Seaside Resort. This is in Samut Prakan Province. It is really a R&R for the Thai Army but the public can come and enjoy the facilities. It is best to come at the end of the day when it is cooler. Between November and March there are also thousands of migratory seagulls.

The elephants were busy in Ayutthaya today with many tourists wanting a ride around the ruins. This costs 400 Baht for 20 minutes or 500 Baht for 30 minutes.

When I came here last month the market was under 3 meters of water. The floods have gone down now revealing the devastation. They had floods last year too but not as deep and only for one month. However, they had no warning and lost all their stock. This time they had warning but floods lasted 2 months & floods went up to the roof.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram is the last major tourist attraction in Ayutthaya to re-open after the floods. Only the lawn at one end is flooded. For the main ruin you can go in without getting your feet wet or muddy.

Sadly the once beautiful garden in the Japanese Village in Ayutthaya is now all dead. It is only 4 years old & cost 5.6 million baht. The money came from Japanese donations. Local government has no money to renovate. The exhibition hall is open though. Entrance fee is 50 Baht.

This Gothic style Western church can be found on an island near Bang Pa-In Palace. It was built by King Rama V in 1878. Although it may look like a Christian building, inside it is very much a Buddhist temple.

This royal palace dates back to the 17th Century but the present buildings were all built by King Chulalongkorn between 1872 and 1889. It is a good stop-over tour if you are going from Bangkok to Ayutthaya. Admission is 100 Baht. Although Bang Pa-In was flooded, no water entered the palace grounds.

This morning I'm exploring Nakhon Nueang Khet Riverside Market on the Chachoengsao / Bangkok border. Some of the stall holders told me that it is very quiet here at the moment because of the floods. Not that they were flooded. Tourists just thought it was. It is quite a nice old market. As well as food & souvenirs you can also go on boat rides.

The King's Pardon this year is expected to benefit over 20,000 prisoners with at least 12,000 of them being released. The rest will receive reduced sentences. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra presided over the official ceremony at Klong Prem Central Prison this morning where 2,766 inmates were released. An estimated 4,500 prisoners will be released in the Bangkok region today.

I am back in Ayutthaya to help with the Big Clean-up and also to see the latest condition of the tourist attractions. Good to see things almost back to normal for the city though outside a lot of farmland is still under water. The trip here only took just over one hour. All the places we visited were dry and clean. Good also to see more tourists back here. The tourism industry is very important for many people here. There is a big tourism fair here from 9-13 December. The annual light and sound show has been postponed until February 2012.

Sun, 27 Nov 2011 02:49:17 -0800 Monkeys in Lopburi http://www.mythaiphotos.com/monkeys-in-lopburi http://www.mythaiphotos.com/monkeys-in-lopburi

Probably the most famous city in Thailand for monkeys is Lopburi. It has some interesting ruins but I think without the monkeys it isn't really worth a visit. So, in order to thank them, a local businessman started a tradition over 20 years ago to put on a banquet just for the monkeys. This now takes place every year on the last Sunday in November.
