Getting Ready for Songkran

Ask ten different people what they think about about the Songkran Festival and you will probably get ten different answers. Some love it and some loathe it. If you are an expat living in Thailand for some time then you will probably be in the latter camp. It is that time of the year when you need to stock up on canned food and movies and stay in your house for five days. But, for myself, although I have experienced 16 Songkrans now, I still look forward to this time of year. I am already getting ready for Songkran which will start after this weekend.

Throwing Lotus Festival

One of my favourite festivals in Thailand is the Lotus Throwing Festival in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan. A revered Buddha image is placed on a boat and as it is taken up and down Samrong Canal local people throw lotus flowers onto the boat.

Don Chedi Fair

If you are in the Suphanburi area this month then I strongly suggest that you go and check out the Don Chedi Fair. This commemorates the glorious victory of King Naresuan the Great which took place on elephant back. As well as the show, there is plenty of the usual delicious food that you can buy in the grounds  around the chedi.

Hat Yai International Lantern Festival

One of the most colourful festivals in Thailand is the annual Lantern Festival in Hat Yai in Southern Thailand. I flew down there last year to enjoy the lights. It is going on now until 28th February 2010. The theme this years is "The Colour of the South".

Boat Racing in Thailand

When the rivers are at the highest level at the end of the rainy season, local people come together to race long boats on canals and rivers.
